Yoga enjoyed a big surge of interest during the Sixties but then yoga began to fall out of favor. Exercisers apparently lost patience with the activity, which offers slow but steady results, and turned to the fast pace and quick shape-up of aerobics.

Now yoga is back – less mystical than in the past, less reminiscent of gurus in pretzel positions, and more attractive than ever to people who are interested in working out rather than working toward some spiritual goal.

If you set the metaphysics aside, yoga is a great stretch and flexibility program. Yoga is increasingly being used by those who are having a trouble in balancing their work and personal life. A stressful working environment and a hectic schedule has a telling impact on the personal lives of the modern day executives and so they are turning to yoga to bring about a peace of their mind and to adopt a perfect work-life balance.

Many disgruntled runners, triathletes, weight trainers and aerobic dancers complain that instead of reducing the stress in their lives, their exercise regimes add more.

People rush to work out every day at lunch, force themselves to keep up and then rushed back to work. Surely, it does something good for them, but it is just another pressure inducer. Yoga is less competitive, less stressful, and above all gives a wonderful feeling of well-being.

Indeed, the healing aspect of yoga is a key to its renewed popularity. The strained knees, aching backs and neck pains generated by the push for fitness and the stress of making it in a competitive world have inspired a crop of instructional books, audio and video programs. Some orthopedic surgeons, chiropractors and neurologists are now referring patients to specific yoga teachers during treatment.

Growing interest in the mind-body connection is fueling a major comeback of the ancient practice, boosted by research suggesting it can reduce stress and blood pressure, improve work performance, even slow the effects of aging.

Several techniques are now being taught in mainstream hospitals and businesses; books about them are brisk sellers and discussion groups have sprung up on the Internet.

Even the Army is interested – it has asked the National Academy of Sciences to study meditation and other new age techniques that might enhance soldiers’ performance.

Details differ, but a common theme is relaxing the body while keeping the mind alert and focused – on an object, sound, breath or body movement. If the mind wanders – and it always does – you gently bring it back and start again.

We live in a competitive and fast-paced world but yoga is a key ingredient to help stay calm amidst the storms.

Yoga has been shown to relieve stress by using exercises that unify the mind, body, and spirit. If you are new to yoga, these tips will start you way to a more centered and peaceful life.

1. Talk to your doctor and explain what type of yoga poses you intend to practice. Your doctor may rule out certain poses if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, a history of retinal detachment, or heart disease. Be sure you follow your doctor’s recommendations.

2. Look for a yoga class that best fits your abilities. Talk to prospective teachers, and decide whether of not you can handle a program before you sign up. It’s very important to take it easy at first. Try a few introductory classes before you attempt more vigorous classes. Don’t move ahead too quickly. Allow your body to adjust to your exercises.

3. Listen to your body and be aware of your physical abilities. You don’t want to hurt yourself. Make sure the instructor understands your level of experience and any limitations you may have. Pay attention to what your body tells you. This is supposed to be fun and relaxing!

4. If you can’t find a class that meets your needs, you can practice yoga at home. There are many books, programs, and tapes available to help you get started. Search for the best products on the Internet and read reviews. Ask friends for their recommendations.

5. Consider private lessons? You can book some one-on-one sessions with a teacher in your area. Most yoga instructors offer private classes or can help you design your own program. This is a great way to get started. You can always take group lessons or practice at home after you’ve had private lessons and learned the basics.

6. Find a yoga buddy. It’s nice to practice with a friend and it will help reduce injuries. It’s also a great way to keep up your enthusiasm and interest.

7. Don’t eat a heavy meal before a session. Wait at least two hours after meals before yoga class or practice. An empty stomach is best, but don’t let yourself get too hungry to think. You won’t be able to focus on the poses or enjoy yourself during the relaxation or meditation exercises.

Now it’s time to grab your mat and a towel and start reaping the benefits your yoga exercises.
